Junior Olympics
This is a track and field meet in late April for 4th through 8th graders in every school in Merced County. The event is a partnership between Kiwanis Club of Merced and Merced County Recreation Department, with assistance from the Golden Valley High School Track Teams. Kiwanis pays the cost of all awards and operates a snack bar to help defray part of this expense. Last year, 1200 athletes from 42 schools participated in this event. Beginning in 2019 the format of this event changed to a two day meet with fewer preliminary contests, to align the local format with regional championships.
Parade Floats
+ The Kiwanis Club of Merced provides a float to publicize local Kiwanis clubs and our Service Leadership Programs. We enter the Atwater 4th of July Parade, Merced Veterans Day Parade, and the Merced Downtown Christmas Parade.
+ KIWIN'S and Circle-K members design and create the float on a 12 by 8 foot flat trailer, and these young ladies and gentlemen ride on the float and pass out candy to bystanders along the parade routes.
+ Local KIWIN'S travel to the Pasadena area in late December each year to work on floats that appear in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day. Members pay their own expenses and volunteer their time as part of the largest service project in Kiwanis.
See Parades Page 2 for more parade photos.
